Sheffield City Region Enterprise Zone

A world-class centre for modern manufacturing and technology

Centre of Excellence:

The Zone, which focuses on advanced high-value manufacturing and technology, has been highlighted as a success in the Financial Times newspaper and ranked number 1 Zone in the UK in a global report from the FDi magazine. World-class businesses in the area surrounding the Zone include Boeing, Siemens and Rolls-Royce, who opened a new advanced blade casting facility in 2014.

The zone is home to the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), a world-class centre for research into advanced manufacturing technologies used in the aerospace, automotive, medical and other high-value manufacturing sectors.

The AMRC has specialist expertise in machining, casting, welding, additive manufacturing, composites, design, structural testing and training. It has developed a global reputation for helping companies overcome manufacturing problems and has become a model for collaborative research involving universities, academics and industry, worldwide.

The same site is also home to the separate Nuclear AMRC.

The AMRC and Nuclear AMRC are both members of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, a consortium of seven leading manufacturing and process research centres, backed by the UK’s innovation agency, Innovate UK.

The most recent additions to the zone include the multimillion pound investment by Nikken Kosakuso Europe who opened their Nikken Innovation Centre Europe in December 2015. The Innovation Centre is packed with advanced equipment to help companies become more competitive by increasing production rates and quality while reducing costs.

In the same month, the AMRC with Boeing also took possession of their new Factory 2050 building which is at the heart of the University of Sheffield’s new advanced manufacturing campus on Sheffield Business Park. Factory 2050 is the latest AMRC project built within the zone and will be the UK’s first totally reconfigurable, digital factory. The revolutionary glass-walled factory was established to meet rising demand for fast, mass customised manufacturing.

Skills training:

The AMRC Training Centre, adjacent to the Zone, provides training in the practical and academic skills that manufacturing companies need to compete globally, from apprenticeship through to doctorate and MBA level. The partnership with the University of Sheffield provides 250 apprenticeships every year for local young people and won the Times Higher Education Outreach Award for creating a blueprint for bridging the manufacturing skills gap and promoting social mobility at the same time.

Logistics hub:

The Zone is strategically located in the heart of the UK logistics and distribution network, at the centre of the M1 motorway, just 60 minutes from UK’s leading port and largest deep sea docks and within 90 minutes of seven major international airports. Doncaster Sheffield International Airport is part of the Zone and provides a growing number of cargo and passenger flights to destinations around the world.
